The military lens
How could you assess risks by looking through different lenses, or learn to deal with risks in another way in order to be better prepared? In our view it is paramount to learn from the risk approaches used in other sectors.
A sector that has risk management in its genes is the military world. The military approach to risk management is often different from that in the corporate world.
➢ The military identify risks that are a potential threat to achieve their mission and mitigate those risks before the mission starts. They think right to left with the end goal always in mind.
➢ The military is often confronted with complex and rapidly changing situations and has learned to identify and handle toxic risks; risks that are seemingly small, but when they occur it triggers other, bigger risks. They not only look at the most likely risk scenario’s, but also at the most dangerous ones.
➢ Planning is everything, but no plan survives the first enemy contact. This fact of life is why the military are trained to handle unexpected circumstances and situations in order to survive and complete the mission. Stress testing, crisis simulations, war gaming and leadership development are in the DNA of the military, because it simply needs practice to win the next battle. They experienced the need to be very adaptive and put early warning indicators in place to adapt quickly to new emerging risks.
