On the 8th November 2018 the second African Law & Business Summit took place in London. The Summit addresses opportunities afforded by Africa’s potential, and the strategies necessary to manage the risks and challenges they present.

“African Law & Business offers unrivalled coverage of the continent’s 26 fastest-growing economies, from arbitration in Angola to direct foreign investment in the Ivory Coast.”

Strategia Co-Founder, Iain Pickard, was invited to take part in a panel debate looking at ‘Natural Resources in Africa – Past, Present, Future’ alongside Kevin Massie, Associate General Counsel, Tullow Oil. John Ffokks, senior partner at John W Ffooks & Co, chaired the debate that covered issues ranging from the current state of the market in the extractive industries to the longer-term trends that may affect it and the requirement to protect the value of investments by understanding and managing risk comprehensively.

Iain and Kevin discussed the importance of nation states working together to ensure that returns are sustainable, while ensuring Africans receive the full benefit from their own natural resources. Iain concluded by highlighting the need for organisations to understand the symbiotic relationship between risks and to avoid looking at risks in silos.

“Past experience has demonstrated that, all too often, it is the complexity of these inter-dependencies that is the cause of failure of many projects.”   Iain Pickard
