Cantor Fitzgerald and Strategia Worldwide

Risk & Mining Breakfast Seminar

22 April 2016 – Investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald and strategic risk management consultancy Strategia Worldwide Ltd hosted a joint breakfast seminar at the Cavalry and Guards Club, London to discuss “A comprehensive approach to risk in complex environments.” The seminar was attended by 61 invited guests from the mining, insurance and risk industries.

Guest speaker Chief Operating Officer of Barrick Gold, and former commander of the SAS, Richard Williams talked about some of the challenges mining companies now face in managing multi faceted risks in highly complex, volatile and difficult environments. Risks, such as those impacting operations (including technical, security and safety risks), license to operate (including environment, social, permitting, and political risks), and their potential impact on financial performance in locations where mining companies need to operate. Richard also highlighted the potential impact of digitization on risk management in this context.

Strategia Worldwide partner Sir Richard Shirreff then outlined the comprehensive approach taken to address strategic risk management issues using Strategia’s unique Analysis, Campaign Design & Deliver (ACDD™) methodology. He discussed examples from Strategia’s recent experience, including their work in Cote D’Ivoire. This was followed by an open forum during which the issues raised were discussed in more detail.

“We partner with our clients to identify and manage inter-related risks and reduce their costs. We do this by joining our forces together with the client’s, building consensus with other stakeholders and applying our framework to design and implement forward-looking plans.  We then ensure that these solutions are the ones that best suit their organisations, that ultimately protect their reputation and enhance their shareholder value.” Sir Richard Shirreff.
