Associate Director Dr. The Honourable Gilbert Greenall book launch – ‘Combat Civilian’

Congratulations to our Associate Director Dr. The Honourable Gilbert Greenall on the launch of his book, ‘Combat Civilian’, a candid memoire that describes his unlikely path to become one of the world’s leading humanitarians.

“… this soldier-turned-doctor, in the mould of Fitzroy McLean or a John Buchan hero, dodges death in the most dangerous parts of the world, not in pursuit of battle but in search of peace and humanitarian relief. Combat Civilian reads like an adventure story.”

Matt Ridley, Author, Environmentalist and Politician

Greenall charts the changes in humanitarian assistance, revealing contradictions and triumphs, from the uncoordinated activities of a few small charities to the multi-billion dollar operations of today. He takes the reader through wars, famines, earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions, yet there is time for humorous observation of misadventure and the absurdity of some decision making. This is a fast moving narrative, an emotional journey and above all an adventure story, but nevertheless includes an observation of the military risks and political constraints.

“Conflict inevitably leads to the need for humanitarian aid… Gilbert Greenall’s story can be read with profit by decision-makers and armchair warriors alike.”
